Five signs your week has busywork worth automating

Most small businesses don’t need a big software project. They need a few annoying, repeated tasks to stop landing on the owner’s desk. Here are five signs you have some.
1. You type the same information more than once
A customer’s name goes into the invoice, then the calendar, then a spreadsheet, then an email. Every copy is a chance for a typo and a few minutes gone. When the same data lives in three places, it can usually be entered once and passed along automatically.
2. Leads wait until you get back to your desk
If a new inquiry sits in an inbox or voicemail until evening, some of those people have already called someone else. A simple auto-reply, a text back, or a shared lead list can make sure every lead gets answered quickly, even when you are on a job.
3. Your “system” is a spreadsheet only one person understands
Spreadsheets are great until the person who built it is out sick. If the business depends on one file and one person’s memory, it is worth turning that into something documented and a little more sturdy.
4. Month-end means a long night of copying numbers
Pulling sales from one place, expenses from another, and pasting them into a report is exactly the kind of work a dashboard can do for you, every day, without the late night.
5. You avoid a tool because it doesn’t talk to your other tools
Plenty of good software goes unused because it would mean one more place to check. Connecting tools so they share information is often cheaper and faster than replacing them.
